Vicksburg Historical Society Programs – 2008
Not all of these programs will be held at the Historic Village Depot, but they will begin at 7:00 p.m., with the actual location to be announced, closer to the date of the event.
May 21 – Wednesday
- David Lyon, author of The Kalamazoo Automobilist, a history of automobile design and building in the Kalamazoo area, including Vicksburg. Dr. Lyon has exhibited his antique Buick auto in the Vicksburg Old Car festival for several years and will include a story about the early cars built in Vicksburg.
June 17 – Tuesday
- Larry Massie – Best selling author, historian and dynamic storyteller, takes his audience on a pilgrimage into his beloved state’s past as he makes history come alive through his storytelling.
NOTE: This program will be held at the Vicksburg Community Center, corner of Main and Prairie streets in the heart of downtown Vicksburg MI.
July 15th – Tuesday
- Tim Moore and Kent McCauley on the history of Simpson/Lee Paper Company and the future of the property as it is about to be rejuvenated.
August 19 – Tuesday
- Lynn Houghton an expert on architecture in Kalamazoo County will give a walking tour of village homes and business district buildings and discuss features that are architecturally interesting.
- Lynn Houghton is a history professor at WMU and co-author of Kalamazoo Lost and Found.
September 16th – Tuesday
- Reminisces of the Big Band days with Bobby Davidson’s band members, including Mason Bishop and others from this area.
- Plans are to have music and dancing from the Big Band era following the talk.
September 20 – Saturday
- Five or six homes in the village will be on display with the hope of making this an annual event.
October 21 – Tuesday
- Maggie Snyder with her annual talk on the most interesting artifacts donated to the Museum during 2008
November 18 – Tuesday
- Priscilla Massie, also a Michigan historian specializing in old-fashioned cooking techniques. She will give a cooking demonstration, much like she does on her regular TV program every other week at noon on WWMT, Channel 3.
December 27 – Saturday – Christmas Past
- A celebration in the Historic Village of the way it was before electricity in our village.
- The purpose is to be transported back to a bye gone ear before electricity. To experience through one’s own eyes, what the world at night looked like without the advantage of electricity and abundant heat.
